The MUSIC OF REV. GARY DAVIS
12/18/2011
1-6pm

This workshop is focused on understanding and learning the guitar styles, techniques and repertoire of Reverend Davis. Woody will break down the ideas into a “toolbox” of practical ideas and illustrate how learning the Rev.’s music provides the perfect foundation to build upon to further your own music. In this session, he will teach new repertoire that include Davis’ gospel, ragtime, blues and “novelty” arrangements covering syncopated picking techniques, practical approaches to the fretboard and understanding chord melody ideas.  The repertoire will be different from previous Davis workshops.

Woody will also explore ways to develop a swinging picking style, and “demystify” the process of creating your own variations within a song. Davis’s music helps establish the basics for less experienced players and, as Rev. Davis used to say provides a “jumping off” point, for more experienced players. Woody who was taught by the master, will play his tapes from his lessons with the Rev. offering a fascinating insight into Davis’s music and teaching.  Enrollment is limited.
