The site for the weekend masterclass will be the The Old Hall Hotel in the historic town of Buxton and begins Friday afternoon and runs Saturday and Sunday. This session will focus on practical approaches for developing fingerstyle technique, understanding the logic of the fretboard, and ways to variations within a tune by “playing off” the chords and creating chord melodies. These ideas will be illustrated while learn a wide-ranging repertoire of tunes including the arrangements of Reverend Gary Davis, Blind Blake, Lonnie Johnson, Eddie Lang as well as Woody’s original compositions. Some of the ideas covered will be syncopated picking, getting a good sound, how to organize your practicing and basic exercises for exploring the fingerboard, understanding the logic of the fretboard, improvising within a tune, open tunings, and ways to develop your own sound. Woody will break down the complexities and illustrate how the techniques of traditional country blues form the basis for other styles including gospel, jazz and contemporary sounds. This workshop is designed as a continuation of the ideas from last years workshop (but open to everyone). It’s a hands on, practical session for people who want to take their picking to the next level, understand basic chord concepts and learn some great tunes in the process.
Our setting in Buxton is the perfect location for creating a relaxed environment. There will classes, informal workshops and individual In addition to the scheduled morning and early afternoon sessions, there will be informal workshops and individual instruction. Enrollment is limited. Students should be familiar with basic picking ( alternating bass ) and play a few tunes. The goal of the weekend is to offer offer new repertoire, practical ideas, and a historical perspective to the art of country blues. The weekend is designed as a compliment to my previous workshops.
