The Music of Reverend Gary Davis;
understanding chord melody

This workshop is devoted to learning the guitar styles and techniques of one of the greatest gospel and ragtime guitarists. Davis’ techniques and harmonic ideas represent some of the most sophisticated and unique approaches in fingerstyle guitar music.  I’ll be teaching new repertoire from previous Davis workshops. The focus will be on understanding practical chord melody and syncopated picking ideas as well as how to create variations within a tune. The arrangements provide the basics for beginners as well as a “jumping off” point, as Davis used to say,  for more experience players. I’ll also be playing my tapes from my lessons – a fascinating insight into Davis’ music and teaching.  This is always a special workshop. Space is limited.
